WINTER SOLSTICE RESTORATIVE YOGA SEQUENCE FREE

Even though I tell myself nothing is going to make me feel better.

But I cajole myself, bargain with myself, gently (and sometimes not-so-gently) nudge myself toward self-care. I don’t want to face what’s going on inside, even though I know I need to. Block out the world and ignore the things that are bothering me. Because as much as it makes me feel better, as much as I know it’s good for me, I don’t want to do it. How do you manage to do yoga when you’re in a dark place? With depression and anxiety (especially when you’re going through a bad day) it’s hard to do things, normal things, basic human function things. Yoga where it’s literally okay to be a crying mess because you’re letting your feelings out. Yoga you can do in bed with pillows and blankets. And guess what, there’s yoga for days like that. When I’m going through periods of depression or intense anxiety, the last thing that I want to do is get out of bed, or shower, or even function.

There’s yoga done on beaches and mountaintops and sunny places. There are headstands and handstands and yoga that you do in heated rooms that have sweat pouring off of you. I have to pay attention to how I’m breathing and I have to pay attention to how I’m holding and carrying my body and where the tension is. To focus on what’s going on in my head and how I’m feeling in that moment. I do yoga because each time my feet hit the mat I am forced to confront myself. I don’t do yoga to lose weight and I don’t do yoga to become more flexible.

Oils associated with the Summer Solstice are: Basil, Calendula, Clove, Ginger, Lime, Neroli, Vetiver, Orange, Petitgrain and Rosemary…all associated with the heat of midsummer. Since Solstice is the longest day of the year, it’s a great time to take advantage of the extra sunlight to wake up early and do something that makes you feel great, whether it’s meditation, yoga, or taking a revitalizing bath or shower infused with essential oils. The practice was originally taught to be done in the morning, with the torso facing the sun.

As yogis, so many of our practices revolve around the sun, including, of course, Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar). Solstice is symbolic of transitioning from the short days of winter to the bright, long days of summer. Stand on the threshold and ask yourself what you wish to encourage in your life? Here are a few ways to celebrate the Summer Solstice: The summer solstice is a doorway into the second half of the year, energizing the paths that lead within. we can use this time to focus on what we wish to nurture and develop in ourselves during the coming months. From now to the winter solstice everything in earth will be withdrawing within. Solstice means 'standing of the sun' and we can connect to this great turning point in the earth's yearly cycle by taking a moment to stop, be still and look back at our own unique journey since the winter solstice. In the midst of the longest day of the year, we simultaneously begin our return to the dark half of the year. Here we celebrate the completion of the cycle that began at the winter solstice. This is summer's height, midsummer, the longest day and the shortest night of the earth's solar year.
